How do you display multiple videos on a page? You could embed videos one after the other on your WordPress site or simply link to the video url. However, that doesn’t make for a particularly appealing presentation. Also, it takes up too much space on WordPress and will invariably slow down your website.
If you opt, instead, to present your videos in a video gallery format – say, on a WordPress page dedicated for videos – you will notice a significant increase in your visitors’ click-through rate. Plus, in a gallery format, visitors to your site won’t stop at just one video. After all, they’re visiting a gallery, not a single isolated video.
In the below post we take a look at some tips for using video on your WordPress site, and we show you how to set up a gallery with videos, using FooGallery PRO.
Plugins vs. Direct Upload
Although you could, theoretically, upload videos directly onto your WordPress website, this is not recommended. WordPress was not designed for this, and the videos you upload this way will significantly slow down your site, the videos will lag, and you will significantly increase the chances of crashing your WordPress server.
Instead, it is preferable to upload your video to a video hosting platform like YouTube and Vimeo. Then, to have your videos play on your WordPress site, you will want to use a simple video gallery plugin. While there is a free version of FooGallery, in order to create a custom video gallery you will need to upgrade to the pro version.
What Makes FooGallery PRO the Best Video Gallery Plugin
With FooGallery PRO you can create a video gallery on WordPress that mixes videos and images. You can add videos from YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, or even self-hosted videos. It’s quick and easy to install and activate. And the ready-made templates allow you to create high-quality video galleries quickly, adding more personality and a greater user experience to your WordPress website.
A Great Video Gallery Providing Great User Experience
FooGallery PRO was designed not only for versatility and high performance but also with an enhanced user experience in mind. After all, you’ll want the visitors to your WordPress site to have the best experience possible, and our video gallery plugin was designed to support you in achieving that goal.
FooGallery PRO has many settings, including allowing you to organize your video content via tags and categories. This not only provides support to the user and enhances their experience, but it also enables you to better optimize your content for search engines. You can label and tag your videos with words that are attractive to search engines and gain visibility for your WordPress video gallery.
And for visitors to your WordPress site, the plugin offers them Filtering that allows them to filter your posts by the tags or categories of your choosing. Making the plugin user-friendly through multi-level filtering and pagination is key to the user experience, which is why our plugin is optimal for WordPress and why it stands out from the others.
How to Install Our WordPress Video Gallery Plugin
Installation is easy. You won’t need to insert any shortcode or do anything highly technical to be up and running with a high-quality video gallery on your WordPress website.
But firstly, it’s important to note that in order to install any plugin on WordPress, you need to use the premium WordPress version, such as the WordPress.com Business Plan, and not the free version of WordPress. The free version of WordPress lets you create a blog and add content immediately, but it has many limitations – for example, you can’t install video plugins.
Next, go to your WordPress dashboard. From the menu on the left-hand side, hover over where it says “Plugins”.
From the pop-up menu, select “Add New”.
You will see a page with various plugins you can add. Go to the top left and, next to where it says “Add Plugins”, click on the box labeled “Upload Plugin”.
You will then be asked to choose a file from your computer.
Click on the box “Choose file”, select the foogallery.zip file you downloaded, and hit “Install Now”.
Installation will be nearly instantaneous.
You will, then, be prompted to choose between “Activate Plugin” or “Go to Plugin Installer”. You can choose either option. Clicking on “Activate Plugin” will be the simplest solution.
Once you click on “Activate Plugin”, you will be asked whether or not you wish to share your data with freemius.com. This service is designed to give plugin developers actionable data so they can then improve on their products. Sharing your data with Freemius is transparent and completely voluntary.
Whether you click “Allow and Continue” or “Skip”, you will then be taken to the FooGallery welcome page, where we will guide you through the many features of our exciting WordPress video plugin.
It’s as easy as that. It takes less than a minute, and now you can create a custom video gallery using our plugin.
Create A Video Gallery
It’s easy to create a video gallery. With the FooGallery PRO video gallery plugin you can begin creating and organizing video galleries immediately.
First, go to your WordPress dashboard. From the menu on the left-hand side, hover over “FooGallery” and select the second option down from the pop-up menu “Add Gallery”.
Give your new video gallery a name. You can always do this later. Additionally, if you scroll down, you will see fields where you can customize your gallery – adjust the thumbnail size, specify what kind of links you’re using, lightbox, spacing, hover effects, paging, filtering, and more. You can customize your gallery now or do this (like I will) after you’ve uploaded your content.
On this screen, you can upload videos from YouTube, other video hosting platforms, or from your computer. Click on the blue box “Add From Media Library”. Here you have three sources from which to import videos.
The first two options, “Upload files” and “Media Library”, allow you to upload videos from your computer or from videos already in your WordPress library. The third option, “Import Videos”, allows you to import a video by simply entering a video’s URL.
Note that videos uploaded from your computer cannot be larger than 4 MB – which means it’s probably a very short video. This is why it may be a better option to first upload the video you plan to use onto a video hosting site such as YouTube or Vimeo. Another option would be to compress your video file before uploading to WordPress. There are many software packages you can choose from, or you can compress your video file online for free.
Once the videos have been uploaded (which is nearly instantaneous), they are then gathered in the Media Library section where you can give them titles, captions, and custom tags and assign them to categories or embed them with code. You can edit the thumbnails here or do that later once you’ve created your video gallery.
From the Media Library section, you need to select the videos you want in your WordPress gallery. In the fields on the right, you can enter information about each video – alt text, title, caption, and description. Once you’re happy with the videos you’ve selected and the metadata you’ve entered, click the blue box “Add Media” in the bottom right corner of the screen.
You will be sent back to the Gallery Settings page where you can customize your gallery (if you didn’t do that beforehand).
Once you’re happy with the videos you’ve selected and the gallery settings you’ve adjusted, click the blue box on the right labeled “Publish”.
Create a Gallery Page
If you haven’t done so already, you will need to create a gallery page – a WordPress page that will host your newly created video gallery.
When you click on the blue box “Publish”, you will then be prompted to create a WordPress video gallery page. When you click on the blue box “Create Gallery Page”, FooGallery will create the page for you, using the name you have assigned to that video gallery. Then, it will give you the option to edit or view the page.
If you click “View”, the page that displays your new video gallery will open in a new tab. You can then make adjustments to the gallery settings, customize it the way you want it, or experiment with the various presets and templates.
When you make a change to the gallery settings, it will reflect automatically in the Gallery Preview tab. You will need to click “Update” in the “Publish” box on the right-hand side to see the changes in a new tab and compare and contrast.
An alternative option is to use the FooGallery block in the Gutenberg editor, or the gallery shortcode, to insert your gallery into an existing page or post.
Make Your Website Stand Out From the Crowd
The FooGallery Plugin allows you to customize your website video galleries. This gives you an opportunity to show your individual personality and make your website stand out from all the others.
From the menu “Gallery Settings” you can choose from among 9 style templates. Each template is customizable, giving you an endless amount of possibilities. And thanks to FooGallery’s Bulk Copy feature, you can save your customized setting and apply them to other galleries you create. This will give your content brand or personality cohesion. And it’s easy to do.
Let’s look at some of the ways FooGallery allows you to customize your gallery.
Once you’ve selected the template you wish to work with, from the menu on the left-hand side you can select what aspects of the gallery you wish to customize.
In the “General” section, you can customize how the thumbnails are presented and what they link to. If you are using the lightbox in FooGallery Pro, the lightbox will generally only work when the thumbnail link is set to “Full Size Image”.
In the “Appearance” section, you can customize many aspects of your video thumbnails, including – the shape, borders, shadows, and the way the thumbnails come into view.
In order to take advantage of the many customizable aspects of the lightbox, you need to set the lightbox to “FooGallery PRO Lightbox” in the “General” section. You can then adjust the theme, colors, captions and more for the lightbox.
These effects will alter how the thumbnail appears and how its appearance will change when a user hovers their cursor over them. You can choose to have the image transition from color to black and white or vice versa. You can have the image zoom in or out, and select an icon to appear when a user hovers over a caption, plus many more customizable features.
Captions, Paging, Filtering, and More
If you play around and experiment with the features of the FooGallery Premium Plugin, you’ll have your video gallery looking like no other gallery on the web. And it will reflect your personality and help you establish brand cohesion.
