Last month, the WordPress community was alerted about a portfolio of 30 compromised plugins. These plugins were altered to include a malicious backdoor so that the sites they were installed on could be hacked by the new owners.
To be clear : these plugins are NOT made or developed by FooPlugins!
This “takeover” resulted in hundreds of thousands of sites being exposed. Not a good time for WordPress site owners!
One of the plugins on the list was Album and Image Gallery Plus Lightbox which you cannot download anymore. The WordPress plugin team released a security patch and closed the plugin very quickly, so kudos to them.
But the problem for those 9000+ sites running that plugin, is they have no easy way forward, and if they want to move to another gallery plugin, it could be a lot of work and potentially an expensive move if a developer needs to get involved.
Luckily, someone reached out to our support team, and asked if we could add a migration option to our FooGallery Migrate plugin, as they had over 4000 galleries to migrate.
So we decided to build it into FooGallery Migrate, and it is now available in version 1.7 which was released 11 May 2026.
Do I Need To Keep The Compromised Plugin Active?
No you do not! We recommend you deactivate and delete the compromised plugin as soon as possible. And FooGallery Migrate will still be able to detect the data in the database and migrate the galleries across.
How Do I Migrate?
Simple. Just follow these steps:
- Simple download and activate both FooGallery Migrate and FooGallery.
- Head over to FooGallery -> Migrate.
- Run the gallery detection.
- Click on the Galleries tab and select the galleries to migrate and click “Start Gallery Migration”.
