If you’ve ever wished your WordPress image gallery could be more than just a grid of thumbnails, something that feels visually cohesive, intentional, and polished, then we have a feature you’re going to love. [FooGallery PRO Starter](https://fooplugins.com/foogallery-wordpress-gallery-plugin/pro-starter/)
now includes **dominant color extraction and color sorting**, a powerful new toolset that brings a whole new dimension to how your galleries look and feel.

Let’s take a look at how this works, why you need it and when to use it.

Table of Contents

## What Is Dominant Color Extraction?

Every image has a dominant color, or the color that defines its overall palette. Think of a sunset photo with deep orange tones, or a forest shot drenched in green. The dominant color extraction feature in FooGallery automatically analyzes each image in your gallery and identifies that primary color.

Once extracted, this color data unlocks two things: **intelligent color-based sorting** and **dynamic color backgrounds**, both of which you can configure directly from your gallery settings.

## How It Works

You will need at least FooGallery PRO Starter to use this feature. Setting it up from there takes just a few clicks. Inside your gallery settings, navigate to the new **Colors tab** and hit the button to extract dominant colors from your images. FooGallery scans each image automatically — no manual color-picking required.

From there, you have two main areas of control:

### 1. Color Backgrounds

You can apply each image’s dominant color as a background behind the thumbnail in your gallery, and also inside the lightbox when a visitor opens an image. The background can be set to **Opaque** (a solid color fill) or **Tinted** (a subtle wash of color, with a slider to control the intensity). The effect is especially striking in the lightbox (as shown below); instead of a plain black or white background, each image opens against its own matching color, creating an immersive, curated feel.

This is where things get really interesting. Rather than sorting your gallery alphabetically or by upload date, you can now sort by color properties. This includes:

- **Hue**: orders images across the color spectrum, like a rainbow progression.
- **Saturation**: from muted, desaturated tones to vivid, fully saturated colors.
- **Lightness**: from darkest to lightest (or reversed, lightest to darkest).
- **Color Index**: a blended color ordering that gives a natural spectral flow.

![FooGallery PRO Starter includes a gallery colors feature](data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201000%20809'%3E%3C/svg%3E)You can also rotate the starting point on the color wheel for Hue and Color Index, so instead of beginning at red, your gallery could start at blue or green. And if you want to reverse any of these sort orders, say lightest to darkest instead of darkest to lightest, that’s a single toggle in the standard Gallery Sorting settings.

## Why Does This Matter?

This feature might seem decorative at first glance, but it has real practical benefits across a range of use cases.

- **For photographers and creatives**, color-sorted galleries immediately look more professional. A [portfolio](https://fooplugins.com/wordpress-photography-portfolio/) that flows naturally from warm tones to cool tones reads as intentional curation rather than a random dump of images. Clients notice the difference.
- **For ecommerce and [product galleries](https://fooplugins.com/foogallery-wordpress-gallery-plugin/pro-commerce/)**, sorting products by color makes it dramatically easier for shoppers to browse. If someone is looking for a blue option, they shouldn’t have to scan every thumbnail – they should be able to see all the blue variants together. Color sorting solves that without any manual reordering.
- **For artists, designers, and visual brands**, the tinted background feature adds depth and atmosphere to an otherwise plain gallery grid. Each image becomes part of a cohesive color story rather than competing with neighbors for attention.
- **For event photographers and stock image sites**, a gallery sorted from light to dark (or dark to light) creates a natural visual rhythm that keeps visitors engaged and scrolling longer.

From an AI search optimization perspective, galleries with clear visual organization, and descriptive content around how they’re structured, are easier for AI models to understand and recommend. A gallery described as “sorted by dominant color from warm to cool tones” is contextually richer than one described simply as “a grid of photos”.

## See It for Yourself

The best way to understand the impact of this feature is to see it live. Check out the [color sorting demo](https://fooplugins.com/foogallery-wordpress-gallery-plugin/dominant-color-sorting/)
on our site … and make sure to open a few images in the lightbox to see the tinted background effect in action.
