Over the weekend we celebrated our one year anniversary as a company. We’re happy to announce that as our anniversary gift to the community, we’ve made a free version of our responsive lightbox plugin.
It’s named FooBox Free and is now available for immediate download on the WordPress plugin repository.

Why FooPlugins Exists
It all started by chance, or did it?
Finding the Right Business Partner
I met Brad Vincent, our Co-founder and Lead Developer, on the Gravity Forms forums about two and half years ago. After working together on a custom plugin for a client, we found that we were both looking for someone to partner with on releasing a premium plugin.
You can read the full story on my personal blog here.
After the successful launch of FooBox v1.0, we decided it was time to build a more robust business together.
Building a WordPress Plugin Business
One may think building a premium WordPress plugin business is relatively easy and straightforward, and in some respects it can be.
Build a plugin, get the word out, start collecting sales.
Building in Sustainability
Not so if you want to build a strong and sustainable business, and that’s what we’re focused on accomplishing in this second year and well into the future.
Building sustainability comes from many different things within your business structure, and we’re still experimenting and learning every single day.
The one constant I can tell you, is that exceptional customer support should always be your #1 priority. It is the life blood of any business and makes your marketing efforts that much easier.
Our customers are the only reason we exist. If we’re not serving their needs, both in product offerings and in support, then our business is not a business. It’s just noise.
My advice to anyone building a premium WordPress plugin business is to realize that all your focus should be on solving customer pain points, not profit.
Profit will come naturally later.
Why We Released a Free Version of FooBox
If you know anything about the Freemium business model, it may surprise you that a free version of FooBox didn’t exist previously.
Solid Features and Codebase
There were a number of reasons for not going the Freemium route with FooBox initially, and probably the most significant was that we were so highly focused on building the best responsive lightbox plugin ever made, that it came down to a matter of available time for development.
In the two years since FooBox first went on sale, we’ve released more than 30 updates including new features and of course, bug and compatibility fixes.
Giving Back to the Community
The release of FooBox Free on the plugin repository is a way to celebrate our business anniversary, give back to the community we love so much, and also a deliberate move to solidify the FooPlugins brand, especially with what we have planned for release in 2014.
There is a not-so-subtle reference to another free repo plugin within the FooBox Free settings pages that we are very excited about. Can you find it?
In 2014 and Beyond
At the beginning of the year, we had very long company meeting and out of it came the decision to narrow our focus on building WordPress plugin that served the needs of users within a specific area of WordPress.
That area is Media. Better media handling. Better management of media. And better leveraging of your media for your content marketing.
Finally, we’d like to extend a very warm thank you to all of our customers, our social followers, and all of you in the development and WordPress community as a whole. Your trust in us and willingness to help spread the word about our company is truly humbling.
Without you, we don’t exist.

For those of you who wanted unicorns and ponies instead of an awesome free plugin. SHAME ON YOU!… but try this out, it’s kind of awesome in that horrible, gaudy, “kitch is kool” kind of way.
